I recently had the opportunity to sit down with someone I truly admire and appreciate: Maggie Heely of Weekend Wedding Warrior. Maggie as been a fixture in the Louisville Wedding scene for quote some time, and she and her team have an impeccable reputation for being THE wedding coordinators in Kentucky. But, I had questions (what is the difference between a coordinator and a planner? Because to be honest, I didn’t know). Check out our conversation below.
Tell me a little bit about Why you started Weekend Wedding Warrior. What was your inspiration? Who is on the team and what makes them unique?
I started Weekend Wedding Warrior in 2010 when I moved to Louisville. As cliche as it sounds, the inspiration came from my own wedding. When I got married in 2008, I really like the wedding planningprocess and felt like my mom and I had a good handle on the planning. However, when it came to the day of the wedding I couldn’t believe how many things either went “wrong” or I just hadn’t thought of before. I literally said, “This should be someone’s job. You should be able to plan your own wedding but not work it.” So I saw a need and filled it.
My team is awesome. Everyone is a lead coordinator and has as much if not more experience with weddings than I do. Alicia, Alexis, and Debbie are all highly professional women which I think sets us apart. Alicia planned events for a large corporation, Debbie planned weddings and managed a large local venue for years, and Alexis has her MBA. You won’t find another group of women who are more educated and tactful. You can feel their confidence. I’m so thankful they have chosen Weekend Wedding Warrior!
What is the difference between what you do and what a Wedding Planner does?
We are wedding coordinators not planners. You plan your wedding and then we gather all the information we need from you and your vendors to make it happen, stress-free. A wedding planner typically has a big part in choosing your vendors and design. We let you make the choices that are best for you, but we pull it together so that it works best and runs smoothly.
What are the services you offer?
We offer one service: wedding day coordination. We are not a jack-of-all-trades, but a master of one. We offer add-on services like personalized vendor recommendations and rehearsal dinner management, but wedding coordination is our craft.
What is the biggest reason a couple should hire you for their wedding day?
The biggest reason a Couple should hire us is that we allow you and your family to enjoy your wedding. You spend so much time and money on one day, but if you and your family can’t enjoy it because they are setting up, tearing down, taking vendor calls, managing the timeline, navigating the many mistakes that are inevitable, etc. then the stress will take away from your ability to be present and enjoy your wedding day. It goes by so fast. We want Couples to start their marriage with joy, not stress and regrets.
Tell me your favorite part about what you do.
Being the secret savior is my favorite part. I love getting to know all the families and learn all the
interpersonal dynamics. Then I love knowing that I truly helped them. I often lay in bed after a wedding and think of all the things that would have gone wrong or that the family would have had to deal with if we weren’t there. Knowing we saved the day in a million little ways is the part that keeps me excited about my job.
