As a wedding photographer, I listen to a lot of wedding music. Something that always strikes me as one of the most signature things a couple can select is the song they have their first dance to, and you would be surprised at how few couples step draw outside the lines in this arena (I’ve heard a lot of “At Last” and “If I Ain’t Got You” in my days in the wedding world). Believe it or not, I listen to a lot of love songs during my editing time to keep myself in those feels while I am selecting my picks and going over everything by hand, so I thought I would share some of my favorites with you all (especially those just beginning the planning process!) So pop in those earbuds, and let me know if your song made the list (or if I need to add it to mine)
Falling like the Stars By James Arthur
James Arthur’s voice was hand picked by the sweet powers that be and crafted perfectly for love songs. Admittedly, this is the only song on my list that I have actually heard at a wedding. The first time I heard this song was DURING a first dance, and I could not help getting caught up in all the feelings. All of them. A few lyrics:
‘I swear to God, when I come home,
I’ll never let go,
Like a river, I flow
To the ocean, I knowYou pull me close, guiding me home’
How can you not melt?
La Vie En Rose by Edith Pilaf
This one is my personal favorite as far as love songs go. Jazzy, soulful, and poetic, to me this one is simple and lovely. Its been redone many times over the years (think Lady Gaga, Michale Buble, and every coffee shop strumming open mic artist under the sun) however I have yet to hear any version of it for a first dance. I’ve included one of my favorite versions of the song below: a modern, piano driven tune with French lyrics.
Ellie Goulding – ‘How Long Will I Love You’
Dreamy popstar Ellie Goulding’s version of the 1990 Waterboy’s song is also on my list. A simple, humming song that is perfect for swaying the night away under the stars with your love.
I Choose You by Sara Bareilles
“Tell the world that we finally got it all right: I Choose You”. I will never understand why Sara Bareilles is the most famous lyricist on the planet, but what do I know. Its a little more upbeat and dance-y than the other songs on the list, but this song is vulnerable and loving, and if you can make it through the music video without welling up with tears I will be personally impressed.
Now I want to hear from you! What are your top picks for love songs, and what are you going to be using as your song for a first dance? Let me know in the comments!
